Impressive and extremely rare articulated wrought iron anti-bite collar from the 18th century. Neck circumference: 38cm (15") PERIOD : 18th century SIZE : 18cm X 7cm SIZE : 7" X 2.7" Archaeological finds suggest that anti-bite collars have been used since the Middle Ages. Artifacts such as metal necklaces with outward pointing spikes or thorns have been found in medieval sites. These collars were usually worn around the necks of domestic animals, such as dogs, to protect them from wolf attacks. However, there is also sporadic evidence to suggest humans may have worn these collars to protect themselves from wolves and other more supernatural creatures in an emergency. Although such historical and archaeological evidence is not abundant, there are enough indications to suggest that this practice was at least marginal. The need for protection from predators, combined with cultural and superstitious considerations, may have prompted some people to wear these collars.
