Bacteria can use an injection mechanism to deliver toxin into the host cell. Scientists have now succeeded in replacing the toxin in this nano-syringe with a different substance, with the ultimate goal of using these nano-syringes in medicine to introduce drugs into body cells in a targeted manner.

In 2015 a team documented 5476 distinct kinds of viruses in the ocean. In 2016 the same team updated its count to 15,222. New study finds 195,728 distinct viral populations, a more than twelvefold increase. This lays groundwork for a better understanding of their impact on global nutrient cycles.
