New study sparks fresh call for seagrass preservation. An increase in carbon dioxide emissions equivalent to 5 million cars a year has been caused by the loss of seagrass meadows around the Australian coastline since the 1950s.

All living things have tipping points: points of no return, beyond which they cannot thrive. A new report in Science shows that maximum daily temperatures above 32.2 degrees Celsius (about 90 degrees Fahrenheit) cause tropical forests to lose stored carbon more quickly

Earliest evidence of Italians' genetic diversity dates back to end of last glacial period. Genetic peculiarities contribute to reducing, on the one hand, the risk of kidney inflammation and skin cancers, and, on the other hand, the risk of diabetes and obesity, favouring sometimes a longer lifespan

A new method of detecting patches of floating macroplastics - larger than 5 millimetres - in marine environments has been made. The approach, which uses data from the European Space Agency Sentinel-2 satellites, is able to distinguish plastics from other materials with 86% accuracy.

Estuaries are warming at twice the rate of oceans and atmosphere. A 12-year study of 166 estuaries in south-east Australia shows that the waters of lakes, creeks, rivers and lagoons increased 2.16 degrees in temperature and increased acidity.

The demise of tropical snakes, an 'invisible' outcome of biodiversity loss. Species extinction rates over the past two centuries are up to 100 times higher than they've ever been in human history. Biodiversity loss is most acute in the tropics

Nitrogen-fixing trees help tropical forests grow faster and store more carbon. The presence of trees that fix nitrogen could double the amount of carbon a forest stores in its first 30 years of regrowth. At maturity, forests with nitrogen fixation took up 10% more carbon than forests without.
