Exposure to household pet cats and dogs in childhood and risk of subsequent diagnosis of schizophrenia or bipolar disorder. We found that exposure to a household pet dog was associated with a significantly decreased hazard of having a subsequent diagnosis of schizophrenia.

Technique can image individual proteins within synapses — Rapid imaging method could help reveal how conditions such as autism affect brain cells. Researchers at MIT and the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT have now devised a new way to rapidly image these synaptic proteins at high resolution.

Using a computational framework a team of scientists identified 104 high-risk genes for schizophrenia. While schizophrenia occurs only in 1% of the population, the risk rises to 50% for a person whose identical twin suffers from it, indicating that genetics plays a major role in the disease.
