Childhood trauma may affect brain structure, predisposing adults to recurring major depressive disorder. Results suggest that both childhood maltreatment and recurring depression are associated with similar reductions in a part of the brain believed to help regulate emotion and self-awareness.

Fear memory involves the strengthening of neural pathways between two brain areas: the hippocampus, which responds to a particular context and encodes it, and the amygdala, which triggers defensive behavior, including fear responses. Weakening these connections could erase the fear memory.

Researchers developed a bandage that changes color when it contacts the acidic microenvironment of a bacterial infection and releases an antibiotic. If drug-resistant bacteria are present, the researchers can shine light to cause the bandage to release reactive oxygen species that kill the bacteria.
