Researchers at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory have reported the first direct measurement of how light excites electrons to initiate a chemical reaction. Ultrashort hard X-ray pulses from the Linac Coherent Light Source were used to map the change in electron density of 1,3-cyclohexadiene.
