Stray dogs can understand human cues. Untrained stray dogs respond to gestures from people, showing that understanding between humans and dogs transcends training. Dogs can closely observe a human and use their understanding of humans to make a decision. This shows intelligence and adaptability.

Scientists unexpectedly witness wolf puppies play fetch. The remarkable ability to interpret human cues that enables a dog to go for a ball and bring it back also exists in wolves. Wolf puppies showing human-directed behavior could have had a selective advantage in early stages of dog domestication.

Birds are shrinking as the climate warms. Forty years of data show that migratory birds have been getting smaller. The team analyzed the measurements of 70,716 bird specimens representing 52 species; they found that the sizes of all of these species declined between 1978 and 2016.

Fathers aid development of larger brains. The study demonstrates once more that only a stable and dependable supply of energy - procured through paternal help, for instance - enables a large brain to develop in the course of evolution.

Study shows modern horses are genetically quite different from the horses of just a few hundred years ago. Two additional now-extinct lineages of horses were identified; one from the Iberian Peninsula and one from Siberia, both of which still existed 4,000-4,500 years ago.

If their social group is unstable male Thai chimpanzees reduce aggressive interactions in order to avoid escalation of conflicts and to promote group cohesion. Their urinary cortisol levels (stress hormone) were higher during unstable times whereas aggression rates were higher during stable periods.

Study compared spiral shape of songbird sperm cells of 36 bird species and found that species whose sperm had a particularly distinct spiral or corkscrew shape also had sperm with high average swimming speed. However, those species also tended to have high rates of abnormal or damaged sperm.
