TIL Refrigerators have magnetic strips so they are easy to open from both the inside and outside. In 1956 the Refridgerator Safety Act was passed to protect kids that would die inside abandoned refrigerators while playing around.

TIL 1956 USA passed the „Refrigerator Safety Act“. Early refrigerators would only open from the outside and trapped/suffocated children. Magnetic strips were used on fridge doors to create an air-proof seal, but would open from the inside with a light push. Even tests with children were conducted.
