TIL That the coldest temperature recorded was -144°F in Vostok Antartica. Humans can’t inhale air that cold for more than a few breaths—it would cause your lungs to hemorrhage. Russian scientists ducking out to check on the weather station would wear masks that warmed the air before they breath in.

TIL that there is an exclusive Antarctic group of scientists called the Club 300. To be a member, they would soak in a 200°F sauna, then run outside naked in -100°F temperatures. The goal is to experience a 300 degree temperature swing, and see how long they can run around the Ceremonial South Pole.

TIL that the Nazi's went on an Antarctic expedition to claim it before WW2. When doing airplane surveys they had to drop weight, so they dropped boxes of metal swastikas that were supposed to be dropped all over Antarctica. So there's boxes of swastikas on the Antarctic ocean floor somewhere.
