TIL researchers have observed that the rotation axes of the central supermassive black holes in a sample of quasars are parallel to each other over distances of billions of light-years. The rotation axes of these quasars tend to be aligned with the vast structures in the cosmic web.

TIL Columbus was marooned on the shores of Jamaica in 1503. The indigenous people gave his crew food but were tired of them stealing. After several months of this, they refused to help. Then Columbus used an upcoming blood moon to convince them God was mad at them. They started giving food again.

TIL Christopher Columbus used a book of astronomical tables when the next lunar eclipse would take place and use it to warn the indigenous people in Jamaica to treat his crew better or else the moon would rise red. Lunar eclipse happened, and they pleaded Columbus to restore the moon.

TIL according to a new 3D model of the Milky Way, our galaxy is warped and shaped like the popular brand of potato chip. “I’d say that it is shaped like a Pringle” said Radek Poleski, an astronomer at Ohio State University who helped to create the new map.
