TIL: Researchers at Yale University School of Medicine devised a system roughly analogous to a dialysis machine, called BrainEx, that restores circulation and oxygen flow to a dead brain. Using BrainEx, they restored restored cellular function in 32 pig brains that had been dead for over four hours.

TIL that the rarest insect in the world is the Lord Howe Island stick insect. It was believed to be extinct since 1920 until some were found again in 2001. In 2006 there were only about 50 of them, but only 2 years later their population increased to 700!

TIL a half male/half female Cardinal was spotted in Pennsylvania. Most gynandromorphs are infertile, but this one has a chance of reproducing as the left side is female; (as in most birds, only the left ovary is functional). He/she was always in the company of a male Cardinal.

TIL that the oldest genetic proof of malaria was found in King Tutankhamun’s body. He had more than one strain of malaria, indicating that he had multiple infections throughout his life. The strains belonged to the most virulent and deadly form of the disease.

TIL Half of European men share King Tut's DNA (haplogroup R1b1a2) as opposed to less than 1% of modern Egyptians. Its suggested that the common ancestor lived in the Caucasus about 9,500 years ago.

TIL, that while they may look silly and harmless, platypuses can be dangerous — at least certain ones. The males come equipped with sharp stingers on the heels of their rear feet that can add some extra pain to a kick.
