TIL that the rarest insect in the world is the Lord Howe Island stick insect. It was believed to be extinct since 1920 until some were found again in 2001. In 2006 there were only about 50 of them, but only 2 years later their population increased to 700!

TIL In Jurassic park (1993), the insect trapped in amber and which made the cloning of dinosaur possible was actually elephant mosquito. It's the only mosquito that doesn't suck blood, so cloning wasn't actually possible.

TIL that Charles Darwin once found two ground beetles and grabbed one in each hand before seeing a "sacred" crucifix beetle (Panagaeus cruxmajor). Afraid to lose it, he put one of the beetles he had between his teeth to grab the crucifix but the beetle spit acid down his throat and he lost them all.

TIL about the emerald wasp. The wasp uses a special venom to prey on cockroaches. Once stung, the cockroach looses its free will and is led by the wasp to its burrow, where it will be buried and eaten alive by the wasp's larvae.

TIL Japanese, but not European, honeybees can “slow cook” giant hornets to death, when they attack the hive. They do this by forming a giant swarm, a “bee ball”, around the hornet and vibrate their flight muscles to create heat. They warm the area up to 116°F, slowly “cooking” the hornet to death.
