TIL a UK study found that North American gray squirrels are smarter than UK red squirrels at tasks to get hazelnuts. Both gray & red equally opened a clear flap to get a nut. But in a multi-step task including operating a lever to get a nut, 91% of gray squirrels solved it vs 62% of red squirrels.

TIL researchers found a mother dolphin who adopted a young melon-headed whale; the dolphin mother nursed the whale who often pushed his "adoptive sister" away from the mother. The whale took on bottlenose behaviors such as surfing, jumping, & socializing with other young males.

TIL Some reindeer really do have red noses like Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer. The color is due to an extremely dense array of blood vessels, packed into the nose in order to supply blood and regulate body temperature in extreme environments.

TIL An elephant's penis is not only 6 feet long, but prehensile. A male elephant can use his penis to swat flies, scratch his belly, to balance like a third leg, and even to grasp onto things. It even does all the work during intercourse.
